Art from Before Sonic Was a Hedgehog Revealed by Designer

Sonic Designer Shares Concept Art

Naoto Ohshima, the designer of the original Sonic the Hedgehog character, recently exposed what the figure may have looked like in an alternate universe – a human child with spiky blue hair. This is what ultimately became the now classic Blue Blur.

Naoto Ohshima posted some concept art for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on Twitter (source: CBR). He stated the designs were for a game starring two twins who had to guard the dream world from ‘Thirteen’, the main antagonist in the Nightmare World.

This thought process eventually led to the development of Sonic.

Examining the pictures, one can easily discern how this idea developed into Sonic’s form. The scenery in the backdrop looks much like Green Hill Zone, with the loop, and the villain’s malicious smirk is not far from the look of Dr. Robotnik. Additionally, Sonic kept his spiky, blue-colored hair in his finished design.

Ohshima was involved with Sonic from the start until Sonic Adventure in 1998, which introduced the character’s primary makeover. Afterwards, Ohshima took the helm of Blinx: The Time Sweeper and its follow-up.

Sonic games

The well-known Sonic the Hedgehog has had a great influence on popular culture, from video games to movies. We are here to determine the very best of the Sonic game series. We used a combination of historical significance, innovation, and how well the games stand the test of time to decide which games to include on the list. For example, Sonic Adventure 1 and the original Sonic the Hedgehog were important to the Sonic series, but they weren’t included due to not meeting modern standards. As chosen by IGN’s Sonic experts, here are the 10 best Sonic Games. At number 10, Sonic Unleashed is often given a bad review, but it can be thought of as one of the best 3D Sonic games. It is still impressive in terms of visuals, and the soundtrack is amazing. The sense of being the fastest thing alive is accurately captured as you go through levels destructing everything in your path. Despite being the most inconsistent of the mainline Sonic games, it is still worthy of being on this list.

It has been more than thirty years since Ohshima and Sega decided on the hedgehog for Sonic, and he is still one of the most well-known video game characters today. 2022 was an exciting year for Sonic with the release of Sonic Frontiers, the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and the Sonic Prime Netflix show. The fun is not over yet, as DLC will be added to Sonic Frontiers later this year.
