An individual familiar with the video game industry answered affirmatively to the speculation that Final Fantasy Tactics will be given a remaster from Square Enix. This individual took to Twitter to respond to an inquiry about the matter, with numerous Final Fantasy aficionados curious as to when Square Enix would go back to the world of Ivalice.
Final Fantasy Tactics, released in 1997 for the PlayStation 1, was the first tactical JRPG in the series, set in the fantastical world of Ivalice during the War of the Lions. It subsequently received an enhanced port, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, for the PSP, iOS and Android. The central focus of the story is the battle for the throne, with protagonist Ramza Beoulve and his companions at the heart of the conflict. The game is notable for its politically-driven plot and a plethora of iconic Final Fantasy Jobs for players to choose from, such as the Black Mage, White Mage and Summoner. Regarded as one of the classics in the series, the game has not seen a new version since the mobile ports of The War of the Lions. Fans are hopeful that Square Enix will remaster the game with graphics similar to those of Tactics Ogre: Reborn or Octopath Traveler 2, and it appears as though at least one industry insider agrees.
In response to a tweet inquiring about the remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics, Bloomberg columnist and games industry insider Jason Schreier simply stated that it was “coming”. This generated a lot of hype among Final Fantasy fans, adding to the previous rumors of a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster, as Square Enix producer Ichiro Hazama revealed the team behind the game was currently occupied with a project.
Final Fantasy Tactics has now been around for 25 years, and the Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary festivities will last until 2023. Products are now available to buy, with more anticipated throughout the coming year. Whether these will incorporate Final Fantasy Tactics has yet to be determined.
This year, Nvidia GeForce Now had a major data leak that included reports of a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster. The list of games was verified by Nvidia, with some already being confirmed. As to whether or not console and PC gamers will be experiencing a return to Ivalice remains to be seen in the coming months.
