Setting the Scene: How the Ishin Trailer Introduces its Epic Tale

Like a Dragon Ishin Yakuza Ryouma

A new trailer for Like A Dragon: Ishin has been released, introducing viewers to protagonist Ryoma Sakamoto and his mission to avenge his mentor. This reboot of the original 2014 Yakuza spinoff was announced by Sega last September, prior to the success of Yakuza 0 that caused the franchise to gain traction. This trailer provides viewers with an overview of the samurai spinoff’s story.

Ahead of the launch of Like A Dragon: Ishin, Sega has divulged information about a variety of returning mini-games, such as card games, chicken race betting, and the karaoke mini-game with a fresh take on “Baka Mitai.” Additionally, Ishin will feature novel elements, like a farming and cooking mini-game, in a Bakumatsu-era Japan setting. As the game’s release draws closer, Sega is working to get gamers hyped up for the narrative of Ishin.

On Monday morning, a new trailer was released for Ishin, giving players a glimpse of the main protagonist, Ryoma Sakamoto, as a samurai of the Tosa clan. After his mentor is slain by a mysterious assassin, Ryoma bands together with the Shinsengumi in order to bring justice to his master’s killer. Like a Dragon: Ishin follows the story of several characters, resembling fan favorites such as Goro Majima and Haruka Sawamura. Furthermore, the spinoff title features the same voice actors for these characters as their modern counterparts.

The reimagining of Like a Dragon, Ishin, will take place in Japan during the waning years of the samurai era, rather than the modern setting of the main-series titles. To reflect this change, the mini-games will be traditional card games like Koi-Koi and Poker, rather than arcades. Nevertheless, Ishin will still feature the card-based battle system of the original version.

Last year, Ishin announced the future of the Like a Dragon franchise with two major reveals. In 2023, Like a Dragon Gaiden, a spinoff focusing on Kazuma Kiryu’s character arc, was announced. Sega also revealed the upcoming main entry in the series, Like a Dragon 8, slated for a 2024 release. Like a Dragon fans can expect plenty of content to look forward to in the coming year.

The game Like a Dragon: Ishin will be available as of February 21 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
