The Last of Us HBO Series Boosts PlayStation Game's UK Sales

For The Last of Us, mere viewership isn’t enough — people are now eager to play it too. As the show makes its first appearance on TV, the initial leg of Joel and Ellie’s escapade has seen an increase in sales for both PS4 and PS5 in the UK.

After the launch of the TV series, The Last of Us Part 1 saw a remarkable 238% increase in sales in the UK boxed charts, landing it at the No. 20 spot in the week of January 21, 2023. Additionally, its remastered predecessor, The Last of Us: Remastered, enjoyed a substantial spike of 322% in sales, securing the No. 32 spot.

It’s not a shock that the figures tie in with the premiere of the live-action version of The Last of Us which aired on January 15th. The UK data only takes into account physical sales, so the amount of people who got the game through PlayStation’s digital store is a mystery.

The Last of Us was unable to surpass the popularity of the more recent PlayStation titles and the typical Nintendo offerings. Fire Emblem Engage, a tactical Switch RPG, entered the chart at the number one position during last week. Afterwards, 2022 titles such as God of War Ragnarok, Pokemon Violet and Scarlet, and FIFA 23 all managed to secure spots in the top ten boxed sales chart.

The Last of Us has made an impact, with its first episode achieving record ratings on HBO. It was the second-most-watched series premiere in the past decade, second only to House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spin-off. Over 4.7 million viewers tuned in for the initial episode.
